AJAX RIA News - Zimbra Revs Desktop

Zimbra Has Released rev 3 Beta of Their Offline E-mail Client

Zimbra, Yahoo’s open source Microsoft-opposing e-mail and calendaring folks, bought last September for $350 million, have released rev 3 beta of their offline e-mail client, Zimbra Desktop, which competes with Outlook, Thunderbird and everybody else with a dog in this race.

It’s unclear what exactly Zimbra brings to the party other than its Yahoo connection.

The widgetry, freely downloadable, is based on Mozilla Prism and versions can run on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. It is supposed to be more fully-featured than, say, Thunderbird like offering mashups called Zimlets and organizing conversations.

A Zimbra blog says, “We’ve aimed to blur the line between an AJAX web client and a conventional desktop application, and this release is a leap towards reaching that goal.”

The widgetry, which includes Zimbra Documents for simple documents and spreadsheets to avoid attachments and having to switch to a desktop program, is supposed to sync offline access to Yahoo Mail, Google Gmail and AOL Mail.

Naturally Zimbra is supporting the iPhone.
